From India to Hong Kong: How Britain's Empire Crumbled

Why Poland Will Overtake British Economy by 2030
Brexit was the stupidest, stupidest, stupidest decision that Britons have taken since World War II. Only a fool would have advocated that the UK exit the European Union, and we all know who that fool was! Unfortunately, there were many Britons who were ill-informed enough to follow him. Nobody with any understanding of economics could have voted to leave the largest, most successful customs union and single market in the whole world, more especially when that single market is right next door, on our doorstep. There will be a special place in Hell reserved for the loudmouth who pushed for this ridiculous outcome. Especially for a country such as ours which is anyway in steep decline. Now, not only have we lost an empire, but we have lost our influence and greatest economic opportunity that was not only open to us but to which we belonged. Would that clowns joined circuses instead of entering politics! – © Mark Alexander

Gay Love / L’amour gay / Schwule Liebe
MARK ALEXANDER: In order to have a successful gay love affair, one must be in no way embarrassed by one's proclivities. On the contrary, one must embrace them! One is exactly who one is, one is exactly as God created one. Gay love is a very beautiful thing. Please note, I speak here of LOVE, not SEX. Homosexual love can be very beautiful; homosexual sex not so much.

Asma al-Assad Given 50/50 Chance of Survival as Leukaemia Returns
THE TELEGRAPH: British-born wife of ousted Syrian dictator, Bashar, is being kept in isolation as condition worsens
Asma al-Assad has been given a 50/50 chance of survival after her leukaemia returned, The Telegraph understands | Miguel Medina/AFP
Asma al-Assad is severely ill with leukaemia and has been isolated by doctors who have given her a “50/50” chance of survival, The Telegraph understands.
The British wife of the ousted Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad, is being kept away from others to prevent infection and cannot be in the same room as anyone else.
Her father, Fawaz Akhras, has been caring for his daughter in Moscow and was described as “heartbroken” by sources in direct contact with her family.
Assad and his wife sought asylum in Moscow after his brutal regime lost its grip on power after 13 years of ruinous civil war.
Syria’s presidency announced in May this year that the then-first lady had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and the blood. » | Ben Farmer | Wednesday, December 25, 2024

Why ‘A Christmas Carol’ Endures
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Since its publication in December 1843, “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens has been a cherished presence during the holiday season. The novella — which Dickens wrote to make money when he was broke — has not gone out of print once in more than 180 years and has been adapted into dozens of movies, stage productions, musicals and mini series, attracting stars from Alastair Sim to the Muppets. Today one can hardly think of Christmas without thinking of Scrooge, the Cratchits and Tiny Tim’s “God bless us, every one.”
In some ways, the story’s enduring appeal is easy to account for. “A Christmas Carol” is, first and foremost, a ghost story — a genre that never seems to go out of fashion. But what’s less easy to account for, and more interesting, is how this 19th-century tale has continued to speak to modern readers, offering moral lessons that have only grown more relevant over the decades.
At its core, it is a story about the forces that exist within all of us: greed and generosity, hatred and love, repentance and forgiveness. It doesn’t hurt that it concerns one of literature’s most compelling characters: Ebenezer Scrooge.
The name Scrooge has become a synonym for a misanthrope. He treats his employee terribly, disdains those less fortunate than him and turns away those collecting donations for the poor. His sole concern is his own material enrichment. » | Roger Rosenblatt | Mr. Rosenblatt is an author of memoirs, novels and meditations, the most recent of which is “A Steinway on the Beach: Wounds and Other Blessings.” | Tuesday, December 24, 2024

King's Christmas Speech 2024
Dec 25, 2024 | The King has offered his heartfelt thanks to the “selfless” doctors and nurses who helped him and his family through the “uncertainties and anxieties of illness”, in a deeply personal Christmas message.
In his third festive address to the nation, the King said the medical teams have provided the “strength, care and comfort we have needed” this year and also thanked all those who have sent their “kind words of sympathy and encouragement”.
He has been diagnosed with cancer this year, undergoing treatment since February, while his daughter-in-law the Princess of Wales had major abdominal surgery followed by chemotherapy.
