Ukraine War: Chanel Restricts Sales of Goods to Russians Abroad
BBC: French luxury giant Chanel has stopped selling its products to people who intend to take them to Russia, after shutting its stores in the country.
Moscow and some customers have accused the firm of being anti-Russian, and threatened to boycott the brand.
Chanel says it is just complying with European Union (EU) sanctions, which ban the sale to Russia of luxury goods priced at more than €300 ($327; £250).
Many Western firms halted operations in Russia after the Ukraine war started.
Chanel told the BBC that sanctions, imposed by the EU, as well as Switzerland, also prohibit the sale of luxury items to individuals who intend to use them in Russia.
The company said it "complies with all laws applicable to our operations and employees worldwide, including trade sanction laws".
"This is why we have rolled out a process to ask clients for whom we do not know the main residency to confirm that the items they are purchasing will not be used in Russia," Chanel said in a statement. » | BBC | Wednesday, April 6, 2022

House of Gucci Is ‘Painful and Insulting’, Says Gucci Family
THE GUARDIAN: Heirs of Aldo Gucci issue statement taking issue with Ridley Scott’s film but have stopped short of legal action
Thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them’": Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci.Photograph: Courtesy of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures Inc./AP
Surviving family members of the Gucci fashion dynasty have expressed unhappiness with their representation in the new film House of Gucci.
In a statement issued on Monday, the heirs of Aldo Gucci – who ran the fashion house for 33 years until the mid-1980s – said they were aggrieved by the lack of consultation by film-makers, as well as their portrayal as “thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them”.
Ridley Scott’s film stars Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, Jeremy Irons as his brother Rodolfo, and Adam Driver as his nephew Maurizio, who took over the firm until he was murdered in 1995 by a hitman hired by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani (played by Lady Gaga).
Based on the 2000 nonfiction book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, the film, said the Guccis, attributes “a tone and an attitude to the protagonists of the well-known events that never belonged to them”.
The statement continued: “This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.” » | Catherine Shoard | Monday, November 29, 2021

Leyna Bloom Is Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue’s First Trans Cover Star
THE GUARDIAN: Model, who is black and Filipino, is also the first ever trans woman of color to be featured in the magazine
Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue has unveiled its first ever transgender cover star, Leyna Bloom.
The model follows in the footsteps of model Valentina Sampaio, who was the first trans model to appear in the pages of the magazine last July. Bloom, who is black and Filipino, is also the first ever trans woman of color to be featured in the magazine.
Writing on Instagram, Bloom said the appearance “heals a lot of pain”. She wrote: “We deserve this moment; we have waited millions of years to show up as survivors and be seen as full humans filled with wonder.”
Bloom, who was part of New York’s ballroom scene, wrote: “This historical moment is important to #girlslikeus because it allows us to live and be seen.” » | Priya Elan | Monday, July 18, 2021

Ball Gowns Galore! And Other Cannes Film Festival Fashion Statements
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Forget comfort clothing. Seriously, forget it. The year of the nontraveling sweatpants has come to an end.
The Cannes Film Festival that just ended was notable for a number of things (besides simply being the first Cannes Film Festival since 2019): That a female director won the Palme d’Or for the first time since 1993; Jodie Foster’s special award; Adam Driver’s singing in “Annette.” And the fact that it was proof positive, if anyone was in doubt, that the year of the nontraveling sweatpants has well and truly come to a close.
Like, put a stiletto in that one and stick it to the wall-of-history close.
If the Oscars kicked off the Return of the Red Carpet, Cannes took it to a whole other level. For 10 days the plumage was out: tulle and tuxedos, glitter and glamour, as if to make up for dressing down of the last, lost year. This film festival, of all film festivals, has become the greatest real life — or real life-ish — runway of the year, other than the Met Gala. Perhaps even more than the Met Gala, which can be handicapped by sometimes silly theme. » | Vanessa Friedman | Monday, July 19, 2021

Fashion Designer Kenzo Takada Dies after Catching Covid-19 Aged 81
THE GUARDIAN: Takada was the first Japanese designer to make a mark on the Paris fashion scene
The Japanese fashion designer Kenzo Takada has died in Paris after contracting Covid-19, a spokesperson has announced. He was 81.
Takada, known best by his first name, was the first designer from Japan to break into the city’s exclusive fashion milieu in the 1970s.
His prêt-à-porter designs with their trademark profusion of bright colours, flowers and jungle prints were a far cry from the traditional Parisian mode of the time, when chic salon presentations were largely prim and proper affairs.
Kenzo, who died at the American hospital on Sunday, was famous not only for his clothes, but went on to create a global brand of perfume and skin products. At the time of his death he was acting honorary president of the Asian Couture Federation. » | Kim Willsher in Paris | Sunday, October 4, 2020

Karl Lagerfeld - German Fashion Designer and Icon | DW Documentary
No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, was as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, 2018 the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses celebrated his 85th birthday. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments were notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld worked in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary of 2015 follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask.
