Is Saudi Arabia More Vulnerable to Houthi Attacks from Yemen? | Inside Story

Three years after launching air strikes in Yemen, Saudi Arabia is under attack. Houthi rebels targeted Riyadh and three other Saudi cities as they step up their response to the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman defends his country's military intervention in the conflict in 2015, saying "the options are between bad and worse".

After three years the situation could not be any worse. About 10,000 killed in the fighting, thousands more dead from the worst recorded outbreak of cholera, and millions facing famine.

The UN calls Yemen the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. And the complex relationships and divisions of all those involved in the conflict make any hope of a settlement even more remote.

Presenter: Elizabeth Puranam | Guests: Mohammed Jumeh, columnist and editor at the Al Quds newspaper; Adam Baron, visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations; Suze van Meegen, protection and advocacy adviser at the Norwegian Refugee Council

Yemen: Saudi Blockade 'A Collective Extermination'

The International Committee of the Red Cross says the Yemeni cities of Sanaa, the country's capital, and al-Bayda now lack clean water. A shortage of fuel caused by the Saudi-led blockade has caused pumping stations to shut down.

Some Yemeni ports have re-opened to allow in desperately needed food and aid, but critics say it’s not enough, as Yemen suffers a humanitarian catastrophe and the worst outbreak of cholera recorded.

Al Jazeera's Mohammed Jamjoom reports.

Yemeni Student is Among Thousands to Win US Visa, Only to Have It Effectively Denied by Travel Ban

Thousands of Yemenis and other nationals from countries covered by Trump’s travel ban are currently stranded in different parts of the world as the State Department refuses to honor the fact that they won a U.S. government immigration lottery. Many of the winners have already sold their homes and cars, left their jobs and even relocated in anticipation of their move to the United States. Their eligibility to receive green cards under the program will end only three days after the travel ban is slated to expire on September 27, meaning their applications will likely not be processed in time, which lawyers say operates as an effective ban. We are joined by Hamed Sufyan Almaqrami, 29-year-old Yemeni Ph.D. student in applied linguistics who was awarded a diversity visa in 2016. Due to Trump’s travel ban, he is now stranded in India. We also speak with his attorney, Yolanda Rondon of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, and Stephen Pattison, a U.S. immigration attorney who spent nearly three decades with the State Department.

In Egypt, dozens of activists have been arrested in a series of sweeping raids in recent days. The arrests came as Egyptians took to the streets to protest an agreement to hand over control of two islands to Saudi Arabia. Critics say the islands belong to Egypt and that their transfer is linked to the billions of dollars the Saudis have given to support Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s government. The arrests and raids come amid a nationwide crackdown against human rights activists and press freedom advocates. We speak with Egyptian filmmaker and writer Omar Robert Hamilton, who says Saudi Arabia’s strategy is to counteract democratic movements in countries surrounding it.

,

It seems to me that Theresa May wants her cake and eat it. And chasing around the world, brown-nosing here and brown-nosing there is most unbecoming. She'd be far better off working with our European brothers and sisters than this. Our future should be in Europe, not the Middle East. – Mark
