Libya Flooding: Recovering and Identifying the Dead in Derna – BBC News

Sep 18, 2023 | A week after catastrophic floods devastated the Libyan city of Derna, rescue teams are continuing to recover dead bodies. The UN says the death toll so far stands at some 11,300. The final total remains unclear - although the one thing that is certain is the sheer scale of this catastrophe. More than 10,000 people remain officially missing, according to figures from the UN's Office for the Co-Ordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Libya Flooding: Most Deaths Could Have Been Avoided, Says UN - BBC News

Sep 14, 2023 | Most of the thousands of deaths in the Libya floods could have been avoided, the UN's World Meteorological Organization has said.

The UN's meteorological branch has criticised the warning systems that were in place in Libya. "If they would have been a normally operating meteorological service, they could have issued warnings," World Meteorological Organization (WMO) secretary-general Petteri Taalas said.

After two dams failed, whole neighbourhoods were swept away in the torrents.


Morocco Earthquake Survivors Desperate for Help - BBC News

Sep 14, 2023 | Life-saving work is taking place against all odds in Morocco as search and rescue operations continue.

The epicentre of the tremor was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) from Marrakesh, and many of the worst affected areas are remote villages and towns.

Since the earthquake struck, there's been a growing spotlight on the deployment of international search teams. On Sunday, amid local criticism of a patchy and slow response by authorities, Morocco's government sparked controversy by deciding to only accept help from four countries. It defended the move, saying "a lack of co-ordination could be counterproductive".

UN Warns of New Crisis in Bosnia - BBC News

Sep 11, 2023 | After a brutal war and genocide that claimed about 100,000 lives and displaced more than two million people, it was hoped that an international peace agreement would allow Bosnia to begin healing from the wounds of conflict.

Twenty-seven years ago this week, leaders of the three main communities agreed a set of principles that would form the basis of the Dayton peace agreement of 1995.

Now, the UN has warned of renewed crisis as Bosnian Serbs who launched the original war in 1992 are threatening to secede from the country.

Hundreds Stranded without Food in Greece Floods - BBC News

Sep 8, 2023 | In Greece, hundreds of people are stranded without food or water after a devastating storm killed at least 10 people and caused enormous damage.

Storm Daniel was the worst to hit the country for more than a century. It's left a trail of devastation across the central region of Thessaly. Homes were swept away, roads and bridges collapsed and much of Greece's best agricultural land, is now under water.

Aug 31, 2023 | The BBC has uncovered evidence that dozens of women were potentially groomed into online sex work by the influencer Andrew Tate's all-male society, the "War Room". A documentary team has spoken to whistle blowers and alleged victims. They were given exclusive access to 12,000 pages of encrypted messages, which reveal the instructions given to war room members to make women gradually submit to their control.

Australia Bans More Single-use Plastics - BBC News

Sep 1, 2023 | Australia has introduced a ban on thick plastic shopping bags and mass balloon releases to cut down on single-use plastics. Authorities in three states are also banning a range of products including plastic cotton buds.

Conservationists have said that Australia has become a world leader in banning single-use plastics. Scientists say that more than 171 trillion pieces of plastics are estimated to be floating in the world's oceans.

What Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Presumed Death Means for Ukraine – BBC News

Aug 25, 2023 | Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin is presumed to have died in a plane crash near Moscow, which killed all 10 people on board - and while his death has yet to be officially confirmed, Russian President Vladimir Putin has paid tribute to his former ally.

The mercenary group has been active on the battlefields of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, and Volodymyr Havrylov, Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine told the BBC that Prigozhin’s death could have an impact on the “confidence and morale” of Wagner troops – particularly among the lower ranks.

Meanwhile, the UK defence ministry has said that although there is “no definite proof” that Yevgeny Prigozhin was on board the plane which crashed, it “is highly likely that he is indeed dead”.

Hawaii Wildfires: At Least 80 Killed in Maui – BBC News

Aug 12, 2023 | Eighty people are now confirmed to have been killed by wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, officials say. There are fears the numbers will rise further, as hundreds are still uncontactable. Firefighters have been trying to contain fires in several areas, including the historic town of Lahaina which has been utterly devastated.

Hawaii Fires Death Toll on Maui Island Rises - BBC News

Aug 11, 2023 | The number of people killed in the Hawaii wildfires has risen to 53, and police said as many as 1,000 may be missing on the island of Maui. Governor Josh Green says the fires are the "largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history" and 80% of historic seaside town Lahaina is "gone". In Lahaina, tourists were forced to jump into the sea and tread water for hours. Firefighters are still battling to contain Maui's wildfires, which began on Tuesday and were fuelled by Hurricane Dora's passing winds.

Man Who Threatened US President Joe Biden Shot Dead in FBI Raid – BBC News

Aug 9, 2023 | A man who posted violent threats against US President Joe Biden and other officials online was shot dead during an FBI raid on Wednesday. Agents were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Craig Robertson at his home in Utah, just hours ahead of a planned visit to the state by Mr Biden. A criminal complaint said Robertson posted threats on Facebook against Mr Biden and a prosecutor pursuing criminal charges against Donald Trump. The FBI declined to give more details.

At Least Six People Confirmed Dead in Hawaii Wildfires - BBC News

Aug 9, 2023 | Hawaii is battling wildfires spurred by winds from Hurricane Dora - prompting evacuations on Maui and the Big Island. Mayor Richard Bissen has confirmed six fatalities in Maui county and warned numbers could rise. The US Coast Guard says it rescued 12 people, after reports of residents escaping a blaze by jumping into the sea near the town of Lahaina, on Maui. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) has authorised the use of federal funds in Hawaii to help people affected by fires.

Issue 1: Ohio Vote Delivers Win for Abortion-rights Supporters - BBC News

Aug 9, 2023 | Ohio has rejected a Republican motion to make it harder to change the state's constitution - a move seen as a defeat for anti-abortion groups. The Republican-controlled state legislature had hoped to raise the bar for constitutional amendments to 60% instead of a simple majority. It was largely seen as a move to derail a planned referendum to place abortion rights into the constitution. US President Joe Biden called it a “victory for democracy and for women”.

Donald Trump Calls Criminal Charges 'Ridiculous' at Campaign Rally - BBC News

Aug 5, 2023 | Donald Trump has held a campaign rally in the southern state of Alabama. He said the latest criminal charges against him were "ridiculous". He said charges over his alleged efforts to overturn the election results were an "unconstitutional travesty" and claimed President Joe Biden was trying to preserve his grip on power.


In the USA, the poor are incarcerated swiftly and unceremoniously for their misdeeds; not so the rich, it seems. In the States, as elsewhere, a good, skilful, expensive lawyer can often work wonders. If this happens in Trump’s case, and Trump manages to get re-elected POTUS, the world will be thrust into turmoil. – © Mark Alexander

Donald Trump Charged with Four Counts in Election Interference Case – BBC News

Aug 1, 2023 | Former US President Donald Trump has been charged with conspiracy to defraud the US, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy against the rights of citizens in an effort to overturn 2020 election result. The unsealed indictment says the former US president "was determined to stay in power" and "spread lies" saying he had won in order to overturn the election. Trump has been summoned to appear in a Washington DC court on Thursday at 16:00 local time.

Pompeii: New Discoveries as Archaeologists Begin Biggest Excavation in a Generation – BBC News

Jul 19, 2023 | Archaeologists have begun the biggest excavation of the ancient city of Pompeii in a generation.

Several new discoveries have already been uncovered, including a bakery, human skeletons and a painting resembling a pizza.

Pompeii in the south of Italy, was a sophisticated ancient Roman city destroyed by a catastrophic volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited tourist attractions in Italy..
