Syria: Nearly Half Rebel Fighters Are Jihadists or Hardline Islamists, Says IHS Jane's Report
Opposition forces battling Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria now number around 100,000 fighters, but after more than two years of fighting they are fragmented into as many as 1,000 bands.
The new study by IHS Jane's, a defence consultancy, estimates there are around 10,000 jihadists - who would include foreign fighters - fighting for powerful factions linked to al-Qaeda.
Another 30,000 to 35,000 are hardline Islamists who share much of the outlook of the jihadists, but are focused purely on the Syrian war rather than a wider international struggle.
There are also at least a further 30,000 moderates belonging to groups that have an Islamic character, meaning only a small minority of the rebels are linked to secular or purely nationalist groups. » | Ben Farmer, Defence Correspondent, and Ruth Sherlock in Beirut | Sunday, September 15, 2013

Al-Qaeda Chief Calls for Attacks on US in 9/11 Speech to Followers
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Al-Qaeda leader, has called on followers to commit attacks inside the US to "bleed America economically", in a speech marking the anniversary of the 9/11 strikes.
In an audio message released yesterday, Zawahiri laid out a plan of attack, saying he wanted a "few of the brothers" to commit small-scale strikes to trigger big spending by Washington on security, while awaiting the opportunity for a major onsalught later.
"We should bleed America economically by provoking it to continue in its massive expenditure on its security, for the weak point of America is its economy, which has already begun to stagger due to the military and security expenditure," he said.
Keeping America in such a state of tension and anticipation only required a few disparate attacks "here and there", he said. » | Josie Ensor | Friday, September 13, 2013

Syria Crisis: Al-Qaeda Seizes Village that Still Speaks the Ancient Language of Christ
Fighting raged through the picturesque mountain village of Maaloula, near Damascus, on Thursday, as the regime launched a counter-attack against the rebels.
"They entered the main square and smashed a statue of the Virgin Mary," said one resident of the area, speaking by phone and too frightened to give his name. "They shelled us from the nearby mountain. Two shells hit the St Thecla convent."
Maaloula, tucked into the honey-coloured cliffs of a mountain range north of Damascus and on a "tentative" list of applicants for Unesco world heritage status, is associated with the earliest days of Christianity.
St Thecla, who is supposedly buried in the convent, was a follower of St Paul who fled to the village in Syria to avoid marriage, having taken an oath of chastity. It is said that the cleft of rock in which the convent is placed opened up to allow her to escape her pursuers.
The inhabitants are mostly Melkite Greek Catholic and Orthodox Christians, but have historically lived peacefully alongside a Sunni Muslim minority. It is one of only three places in the world where Western Aramaic, a dialect of the language spoken by Christ, is still used. » | Ruth Sherlock, Beirut and Magdy Samaan | Thursday, September 05, 2013

America Issues Travel Alert over Fears of Al-Qaeda Plot to Target Tourists
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: America has issued a worldwide travel alert after warning of an al Qaeda plot to attack public transport or tourist sites.
The US State Department said the risk of a terror attack was particularly high in the Middle East and North Africa between now and the end of August.
It followed a warning from America on Thursday of an al Qaeda plot to attack its embassies in Muslim countries.
Britain changed its travel advice for Saudi Arabia and the Gulf yesterday in the wake of the latest alert, telling diplomats in Arabian capitals to exercise vigilance until the Eid festival, marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Thursday.
In a statement last night, the US State Department officials said American citizens living or travelling overseas should be aware of a potential al-Qaeda attack either in or emanating from the Arabian peninsula.
"Current information suggests that al-Qaeda and affiliated organisations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," the department said.
The attacks are seen as occurring in or emanating from the Arabian peninsula, according to the statement, and "may involve public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure." » | Damien McElroy, and Raf Sanchez in Washington | Friday, August 02, 2013

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Just like Tony Blair over Iraq, the Prime Minister has lost touch with reality when it comes to Syria
The longer a prime minister remains in 10 Downing Street, the more likely he or she is to go mad. Something of the sort happened to Gordon Brown and also, from 2003 onwards if not before, to Tony Blair. No prime minister has left office in full possession of his or her mental faculties since Jim Callaghan in early 1979. » | Peter Oborne | Wednesday, June 05, 2013
My comment:
Why has Cameron put us on Al-Qaeda's side?
Do you want the short answer or the long answer?
If it's the short answer you want, it's this: He's a duffer when it comes to Islam. He needs to read a book such as Islam for Dummies. And if it's available, Islam for Duffers too.
If it's the long answer you want, I don't have the time right now; and in any case, it would probably be taken down by the moderators. In short, Cameron knows diddly sh** about Islam. – © Mark
