More than $940m raised for the Lebanon
The Lebanon donor conference in Stockholm has raised more than $940m in pledges of new money, Swedish Foreign Minister Jan Eliasson has said.

The organisers of the aid conference had set a target of $500m.

The new pledges bring the total amount of money raised to help with the rebuilding of Lebanon to $1.2bn.

PM Fouad Siniora told the meeting his country had sustained billions of dollars of damages during the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Mr Siniora said Lebanon's recovery from its civil war had been "wiped out in days". Donors make huge Lebanon pledge

I don't mind the money going to Lebanon if it helps sustain the current government but I'm afraid that Hezbollah is going to make strong gains in Lebanon's next elections. I backed Israel's response but I think overall it has backfired. When will politicians learn to let the military do their jobs?

I don't care about Lebanon. They have Hezballah, let Hezb fix Lebanon, let the Arab oil states fix Lebanon. Fewer madrassas in the West.

Believe this or not, but I thought I had answered you on a different thread!

Well, anyway, WELCOME BACK! I hope you are feeling much, much better. You have been missed here.

I, too, backed Israel's response; but in the end, it wasn't executed correctly. As you say: Too much interference from the politicians.

Of course, I feel sorry for any innocent Lebanese; but the problem is that the innocent ones don't seem to have a loud enough voice! I believe firmly in the old adage, Silence gives consent.

I agree with you: Israel's strategy does indeed seem to have backfired.

There is much to be said for your startegy. In many ways, with the West sending so much money to the Lebanon, it could be thought of as a form of jizyah.

There's a strong argument for letting Iran and Syria fund the reconstruction. After all, they are the ones who have been funding Hizbullah and egging it on.

The West is crazy. On the one hand, they are trying to fight the jihad being waged against it; on the other, they send billions more to that very region where the jihadis operate from.

Will we ever win this war being waged against us, I wonder?
