EU foreign ministers have agreed on a common position to start membership talks with Turkey after Cyprus raised last-minute objections.

The agreement came after crisis talks between the Austrian EU presidency and Cyprus on Sunday night and Monday.

Cyprus wanted the EU to press Turkey to recognise Cyprus - divided since 1974 - and open its ports to Cypriot ships.

Turkey threatened to boycott the meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg unless Cyprus compromised. EU agrees to start Turkey talks

Lawd help us. The fools are going ahead. I can only say, the Saudi's must havt paid out some pretty hefty sums.

When the inevitable conflict in Europe comes, I only hope America has the common sense to slam the door in the faces of the ruling elite, as they jump ship, for they will bring their poison with them.

Mark,
From the second link in your article:

The EU has prepared a report critical of Turkey's reform process. That will be poorly received by the Turkish government, our correspondent adds.

I shouldn't wonder that it will be poorly received by the Turks.

Notice that Turkey expect Cyprus to compromise. Another non-suprise. Muslims always want the other side to compromise.

Oh no, not again. This can only happen if western politicians are totally corrupt, meaning on the 'take' from the Islamic world, and certainly without principle or human worth. Please someone rid the world of these disgusting vermin who would sell their own mothers for a few dollars.

Oops, I am truly sorry. In the comment I just made, I was far too generous to the politicians. They are not nearly as noble and good as I described. Alas, I must not describe them as they really are, for it would not be seemly to use such words on your blog, Mark.

Yes, indeed: "Lawd" help us!

As for Saudi money being in it somewhere: Saudi money is ubiquitous these days, I'm afraid.

Yes, and I understand that Cyprus backed down, too. How foolish is that?

There are so many politicians on the take from the Islamic world. They are in the pay of their masters! Disgusting, isn't it?

Please someone rid the world of these disgusting vermin who would sell their own mothers for a few dollars.

Yes, PLEASE!

Turkey is on odd country a real mixed bag.

Yes and no. When all is said and done, it is Islamic to its core!
