Iranians Describe Fear and Sadness over Trump Evacuation Warning
BBC: Many Iranians have reacted with fear and dismay at Donald Trump's instruction to "immediately evacuate Tehran".
The capital's almost 10 million residents have now been left to decide whether to shelter in their homes - bracing themselves for what could come next - or attempt to join the heavy traffic leaving the country's capital.
President Trump made his comments just moments before cutting short his trip to the G7 in Canada, leaving many wondering if this could mean a further escalation in the conflict between Israel and Iran was imminent.
Many of those deciding to leave Tehran are posting images of their homes online, a poignant trend in Persian-language social media for those leaving their city behind. » | Azadeh Moshiri and Taraneh Fathalian | BBC Pakistan correspondent and BBC Persian | Tuesday, June 17, 2025

MPs Vote to Decriminalise Abortion for Women in England and Wales
BBC: MPs have voted to change abortion legislation to stop women in England and Wales being prosecuted for ending their pregnancy.
The landslide vote to decriminalise the procedure is the biggest change to abortion laws in England and Wales for nearly 60 years.
Women who terminate their pregnancy outside the rules, for example after 24 weeks, will no longer be at risk of being investigated by police.
The law will still penalise anyone who assists a woman, including medical professionals, in getting an abortion outside the current legal framework.
Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi put forward the amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill, which was passed by a majority of 242 votes.
As an issue of conscience, MPs were allowed to vote according to their personal beliefs. » | Jennifer McKiernan | Political reporter | Tuesday, June 17, 2025

Viking Age Burial Site Full of Ancient Objects Found in Denmark, Say Experts
THE GUARDIAN: ‘Spectacular’ discovery at site of about 30 graves includes pearls, coins, ceramics and a box containing gold thread
A 10th-century burial site believed to have belonged to a Viking noble family has been discovered in northern Denmark, packed with a “spectacular” trove of ancient objects, a museum has said.
The discovery came almost by chance when pearls, coins, ceramics and a box containing a gold thread were unearthed during construction work near Lisbjerg, a village located 4 miles (7km) north of Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city.
Archaeologists found that the site also contained around 30 graves dating from the second half of the 10th century, when the famous King Harald Bluetooth reigned, said the Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus. » | Agence France-Presse in Aarhus | Tuesday, June 17, 2025

A Patriotic American Speaks His Mind - PARADE OF SHAME
Jun 14, 2025 | When Dwight Eisenhower was asked if the United States should have a military parade, he responded this way: "Absolutely not. we are the pre-eminent power on Earth. For us to try and imitate what the Soviets are doing in Red Square would make us look weak.” Our power doesn’t lie in our ability to destroy anyone or anything.
Our power lies in our ability to help people live better lives. And that’s why what’s happening these days is so deeply disempowering. We’re seeing a perversion of the values that indeed did make America great.
Ah, what we could have done over the last fifty years to expand people’s opportunities, while instead we worked so steadily to diminish them. Deflecting attention onto a military parade that will cost taxpayers $25M to $45 is obscene, when the government literally took food from the mouths of hungry children because they say we waste too much money. This parade will not be a celebration of our military; it will be a celebration of our war machine. The arms manufacturers. What in DC is called “The Blob.” Those children, and our veterans, be damned.
Does it have to be this way? No. And on the other side of this twisted era, I pray that it will not be.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age: Trump’s MAGA Mindset: The US’s Biggest Export
Jun 4, 2025 | Most of us have, for so long, lived under the shadow of American exports, that we’d be hard-pressed to choose which was the most influential. Hollywood rom-coms? Coupons? Halloween?
That list might have been relevant a couple of weeks ago. Now America’s biggest export is Donald Trump’s MAGA mindset, according to international and political editor, Peter Hartcher.
Today, he joins me to discuss Trump’s hidden announcement last week about a new level of imminent American interference, globally; one not seen since the end of the Cold War. And how it will change other countries for years to come.
Europe should be standing up to Trump and Putin – instead it is mirroring them: Public opinion is clamouring for closer EU cooperation. The last thing we need is Ursula von der Leyen pandering to the far right Donald Trump’s “America First” policies are undermining decades of transatlantic cooperation just as Putin’s Russia destabilises Europe with direct military aggression. But these twin shocks have unintentionally accomplished something the EU institutions never could. They have made European integration feel not just important, but existential – a matter of democratic survival – for ordinary citizens. »
