Armed Police Arrest Four Men amid Fears of Islamist Remembrance Day Terror Plot

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Armed police swoop on addresses in West London and Thames Valley just days before Remembrance Sunday, arresting four men over plans to mount an Islamist terror attack

Four suspected Islamist terrorists have been arrested by armed police on suspicion of plotting attacks in the UK – amid fears of a Remembrance Sunday plot.

Those arrested included a 19-year-old High Wycombe man who neighbours said had returned from a trip to Pakistan earlier this year and was described as having been recently radicalised.

Police would not discuss whether the men had a specific target in mind but the timing of the raids raises the prospect that they may have been planning an incident on Remembrance Sunday.

It is understood there is no direct link to Syria or the terror group Isil but one line of police inquiry is likely to examine whether the men were planning a gun attack.

Iran’s Dog Walkers Could Face 74 Lashes in Criminalisation of Pet Ownership

THE GUARDIAN: Proposed law to prevent Iranians from keeping animals deemed unclean is latest crackdown on ‘western cultural invasion’

A group of Iranian MPs has proposed making it a criminal offence to keep dogs as pets or walk them in public, with offenders subject to 74 lashes or a fine.

Iran’s reformist Shargh newspaper reported on Thursday that 32 members of parliament, who are mostly affiliated to the conservatives, had put forward the proposal for the legislative body to vote on.

If the bill passes the Majlis (Iranian parliament), “walking dogs, trading them or keeping them at home will be punishable by 74 lashes or a fine of 1m to 10m Tomans [an equivalent of £200 to £2,000],” Shargh said.

“Walking and playing with animals such as dogs and monkeys outdoors and in public places are harmful to the health and the peace of other people, especially kids and women, and are against our Islamic culture,” the bill says.

Sectarian Tensions Running High, Say Australian Muslim Leaders

CNN: (CNN) -- Muslim community leaders in Australia say sectarian tensions are soaring, as radicalized Sunni youth, inspired by ISIS, seek to import the religious conflicts wracking the Middle East.

"The tensions are very high and will continue to be high," said Jamal Daoud, a Shia community leader in Sydney, where a 47-year old Shia leader was shot in the shoulder early Monday morning, as worshipers observed the Shia ritual of Ashura.

He said Rasoul Al Mousawi, a leader in the Shia community focused around the Islamic center in Greenacre, south-west Sydney, had been released from hospital on Tuesday and was doing well.

The attack was only one incident in a string of attacks and threats against Shia Muslims by Sunni extremists who sympathized with ISIS, he claimed, and had followed an incident where a group of men had driven past the Islamic center, yelling comments such as "IS lives forever" and "Shia dogs" in Arabic.

A security guard had also been attacked by a group of men who appeared to be followers of the austere Wahhabi tradition of Sunni Islam on Friday, he said.

"There's high tension between Sunni and Shia, but these extremists, they threaten and attack Sunnis too," he said.

"Anyone who speaks against the fighting in Syria and advocating the government to take action against people in Iraq and Syria -- they are threatened and attacked."

Bill Maher Warns Berkeley Students Protesting Him Over Islam That Their Free Speech Reputation Hangs in the Balance

THE BLAZE: As TheBlaze previously reported, some students at the University of California-Berkeley are petitioning to cancel a December graduation speech by comedian and talk show host Bill Maher over what they say are his “racist and bigoted” views on Islam.

Now Maher is firing back.

On numerous occasions Maher has leveled harsh words against Islam, particularly the radical variety, most recently during a tense debate with actor Ben Affleck on “Real Time” that grabbed many headlines.

In the wake of that dustup, a Chang.org petition to disinvite Maher from the Berkeley graduation has drawn more than 5,000 signers:

“Bill Maher is a blatant bigot and racist who has no respect for the values UC Berkeley students and administration stand for. In a time where climate is a priority for all on campus, we cannot invite an individual who himself perpetuates a dangerous learning environment. Bill Maher’s public statements on various religions and cultures are offensive and his dangerous rhetoric has found its way into our campus communities.”

David Cameron has said he wants to see a British Asian Prime Minister in his lifetime.

Mr Cameron made the remarks at an awards dinner in central London where Sajid Javid, the Culture secretary who is widely tipped as his successor, topped a power list of the most influential Asians in the UK.

Mr Cameron told the GG2 Leadership Awards: "Let us think big about what Britons of all backgrounds can achieve.

"When I hear 'sir', 'your honour' or 'right honourable', I want them to be followed by a British Asian name."

To cheers he added: "One day I want to hear that title 'Prime Minister' followed by a British Asian name."

A Turkish cosmetics company has used a former al-Qaeda "mastermind" as the model to advertise its hair removal cream.

The advert shows a photograph of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed – known as the "principle architect" of the September 11 attacks – wearing a baggy white T-shirt that exposes a hairy neck and shoulders.

Above the photograph, the advert's slogan reads: "The hair will not go away because you keep waiting!"

THE GUARDIAN: It is psychologically unnatural to claim that you hate an ideology without hating the people in whose lives it is expressed

It is a trope among people who loathe and fear Islam that their fear and loathing has nothing in common with racism because Islam is not a race, the implication being that hating Muslims is rational and wise whereas hating black people is deeply irrational and stupid.

Some people who claim that Islam is profoundly evil will also say that they bear Muslims no ill will but I don’t think they are telling the truth. It is really difficult and indeed psychologically unnatural to claim that you hate an ideology without hating the people in whose lives it is expressed. Religions, nations, and even races are all shared imaginative constructs (although nations and races have other characteristics as well) and if you really want to extirpate them, you must extirpate the people who imagine them as well.

I remember George W Bush explaining that we were not going to war with the Iraqi people, but with the Iraqi government. Since then, something like a million of the Iraqi people have died as a result of our not going to war with them.
