Gina Lollobrigida, Italian Star of the 1950s and 60s, Dies Aged 95

Gina Lollobrigida, the Italian actor once called “the most beautiful woman in the world”, has died at the age of 95 Corriere della Sera reported the news, saying she had been “hospitalised for some time”.

Through the 1950s and 60s, Lollobrigida was one of the world’s most desired performers and starred in a large number of European and American films opposite many of Hollywood’s leading men of the day.

Born in 1927 in Subiaco, in the mountains east of Rome, she was the daughter of a furniture maker. In her teenage years she did some modelling and entered beauty contests, and in 1947 placed third in the Miss Italia pageant. A prominent pro-reform law professor in Saudi Arabia was sentenced to death for alleged crimes including having a Twitter account and using WhatsApp to share news considered “hostile” to the kingdom, according to court documents seen by the Guardian.

The arrest of Awad Al-Qarni, 65, in September 2017 represented the start of a crackdown against dissent by the then newly named crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman.

Details of the charges brought against Al-Qarni have now been shared with the Guardian by his son Nasser, who last year fled the kingdom and is living in the UK, where he has said he is seeking asylum protection.

Britain has imposed sanctions on the Iranian prosecutor general after the country’s execution of the British-Iranian dual national Alireza Akbari, while Iran has summoned the UK ambassador.

Akbar was executed on Saturday after Iranian authorities claimed he was an MI6 spy, charges his family and the Foreign Office deny.

Britain had already summoned the most senior Iranian diplomat in the UK to the Foreign Office to demand an explanation. And in what may prove a turning point in British-Iranian relations, the UK’s response is likely to go further by eventually including the proscription of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, a move that is also being considered by the EU.

The Foreign Office has known about Akbari’s detention for a long time, but had chosen, in line with the wishes of the family, to put private pressure on the regime to secure his release. Friday the 13th proved lucky for one – someone who won the estimated $1.35bn lottery jackpot after a period of three months and 25 drawings that had seen no one across the US win the grand prize.

The winner, whose name is not yet known, overcame steep odds of 1 in 302.6 million and had bought their ticket in Maine, the first time the state has scored the Mega Millions lottery jackpot.

“Congratulations to the Maine state lottery, which has just won its first-ever Mega Millions jackpot,” Pat McDonald, Ohio lottery director and lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a statement early Saturday.

Civil servants are estimated to be spending tens of millions of pounds establishing which laws and regulations could be scrapped under the government’s controversial retained EU laws bill.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) last week admitted it spent £600,000 on staffing costs alone in just two months as part of its review of the bill.

Soziale Protestbewegungen werden zunehmend von rechtspopulistischen Parteien für ihre Zwecke genutzt.

Nicht nur in Deutschland oder Frankreich wächst die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich. Selbst in Schweden, das vielen noch als Sozialparadies gilt, wird die soziale Schere immer größer. Jeder fünfte Rentner lebt dort unter der Armutsgrenze, Frauen sind besonders betroffen. In Spanien sind mehr als die Hälfte der unter 30-Jährigen prekär beschäftigt.

Welche Explosivität steckt in der neuen Klasse des Prekariats? Wie steht es um Europas sozialen Frieden? Und wie könnte man der großen Unsicherheit und der Polarisierung des politischen Systems entgegenwirken? 'Taking Back Control' and the promises of cheaper food clothing and footwear were simplistic and dishonest messages which persuaded millions who knew no better to vote to leave the EU

An excellent synopsis. Never were truer words spoken. You've really hit the nail on the head with this great video. The politicians in favour of Brexit knew exactly how to manipulate the man in the street, didn't they? And the man in the street fell for the twaddle hook, line and sinker. Brexiteers bought into the nonsense being peddled at the time; and they were really taken in. They were played by the politicians like the proverbial fiddle.

I was raised in a Conservative-voting household and raised also to be proud of 'king and country'. I'm afraid that I no longer feel the way I was raised to feel. All the warts have been exposed for the whole world to see; and the Conservative Party is as corrupt as corrupt can be. Most of the politicians that I see are not especially bright or competent either. Many of them are chancers.

I read in the last few days that there is now talk of that 'BoJo the clown' might well be on the way back. Another corrupt politician and an incompetent, self-aggrandising buffoon to boot. The quicker I find a way out of this hellhole, the better it will be, the happier I will feel. Living in my home country makes me feel like a fish out of water. It's as bad as that. It was bad before, but Brexit has put the kibosh on any good feelings I had left for my country.

It is my sincere belief that this country will find it difficult to recover from the difficulties it now finds itself in. Furthermore, its international reputation has been trashed by successive, ridiculous Conservative prime ministers and recent events. The weather in the UK makes it all the more depressing. Her Majesty the Queen held it all together wonderfully, but now that she has passed, it is difficult to see even how the monarchy won't continue to get even shakier.

Vous êtes l’un des rares à avoir vu venir la crise de 2008. La situation d’aujourd’hui est-elle comparable ?

Difficile à dire, car nous sommes confrontés à une série de risques aux horizons temporels différents. A court terme, il y a ceux liés à la guerre en Ukraine, bien sûr, à l’inflation et au spectre d’une crise financière qui pourrait advenir ces prochains mois ou dans les deux ou trois années à venir. Lisa Marie Presley, singer and the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, has died at the age of 54, after suddenly being hospitalised on Thursday.

Her 77-year-old mother confirmed Presley’s death later on Thursday night.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley said in a statement. “She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

No reasonable inquiry into the cause of Britain’s present political and economic difficulties would point the finger at trade union power. Industrial action is an issue now because of grievances amassed over many years. To respond, as the government intends, with legal curtailment of the right to strike is a misdiagnosis of the problem and an opportunistic assault on fundamental rights.

The proposed bill would give the business secretary, Grant Shapps, powers to define “minimum service levels” in certain sectors – health, fire and rescue, education, border control, transport and nuclear safety. Workers would be required to maintain that level during a strike or forfeit employment rights, including legal protection against unfair dismissal. Geschwisterrivalitäten sind so alt wie Profilneurosen, weshalb sich die frühen Memoiren des Prinzen Harry eigentlich abhaken ließen: als Befreiungsschlag eines noch nicht vollständig durchtherapierten Narzissten, der überdies maximale Tantiemen anstrebt. Es dürfte niemanden überrascht haben, dass die Geburt in eine Königsfamilie, zumal in die britische, nicht nur mit Privilegien einhergeht, sondern mit Verlusten wie dem Verzicht auf Privatsphäre. Als Zweitgeborener mag der Preis besonders hoch erscheinen, weil ein Leben im semiglamourösen Schatten des Erstgeborenen vorgezeichnet ist. Harrys Klage, statt einer Familie eine Institution bekommen zu haben, ist so nachvollziehbar wie banal. Le cardinal australien George Pell, ancien haut responsable de l’Eglise catholique accusé de violences sexuelles avant d’être blanchi, est mort à Rome à l’âge de 81 ans, a confirmé, mercredi 11 janvier, un responsable du clergé.

Issu d’un milieu modeste de l’Etat de Victoria, George Pell a gravi les échelons pour devenir grand argentier du Vatican, préfet du secrétariat à l’économie du Saint-Siège de 2014 à 2019. Mais son ascension a été entachée par des condamnations pénales, plus tard annulées, pour avoir sexuellement agressé deux enfants de chœur australiens dans les années 1990, alors qu’il était archevêque de Melbourne. Ses soutiens ont fait mercredi l’éloge de ce « saint »des temps modernes tandis que, pour les victimes de violences sexuelles de l’Eglise, sa mort a ravivé de douloureux souvenirs.

L’année 2022 aura marqué la défaite politique du Brexit au Royaume-Uni. Désormais, 60 % des Britanniques affirment que la sortie de l’Union européenne (UE) a été une erreur, contre 40 % qui la soutiennent. Le basculement a commencé à l’été 2021 (les Britanniques étaient alors partagés, à 50 % dans chaque camp) et, depuis, les deux courbes s’éloignent progressivement.

Ils peuvent désormais constater les conséquences négatives de leur décision. Difficile de faire précisément le tri entre le Brexit, la pandémie, le choc énergétique et le chaos politique, mais les faits sont là : l’économie décroche plus qu’ailleurs. Entre le deuxième trimestre 2016, date du référendum, et celui de 2022, le Royaume-Uni a connu une croissance inférieure de 5,5 % à celle d’un groupe d’une quarantaine de pays comparables qui connaissaient, les années précédentes, une croissance similaire, selon les calculs du Centre for European Reform, un groupe de réflexion. Le volume du commerce extérieur britannique a également augmenté de 7 % de moins que ce groupe. The “absolutely catastrophic” implications of attacks on the behaviour of the royal family in the new memoir from the Duke of Sussex are being ignored, according to Catherine Mayer, the royal analyst and biographer of King Charles.

Early publication of the Spanish edition of Spare has put the focus on personality clashes, some of it fed by the royal publicity machine, and this could threaten the constitutional monarchy, whether or not the British public is calling for such a change, Mayer believes.

“It is possibly something that will mark the beginning of the end of the monarchy, and that is what we should discuss. It is important, given the lack of trust in the state at the moment and an upsurge in rightwing politics. In a new teaser for the CBS News interview which is due to air this Sunday, Harry tells interviewer Anderson Cooper he was “incredibly naive” about how the British press would treat his relationship with the American actress. “The race element” to the couple’s relationship had been “jumped on straight away” by the British press, he tells the programme, adding that he had no idea how “bigoted” the UK media was until his wife and their relationship were thrust into the spotlight. “What Meghan had to go through was similar in some part to what Kate and what Camilla, went through – very different circumstances,” the duke says in the 30-second clip released on Thursday. “But then you add in the race element, which was what the press – (the) British press jumped on straight away. “I went into this incredibly naive. US Condemns Iran for Hanging Anti-government Protesters - BBC News

Jan 8, 2023 | Two men have been hanged in Iran for killing a member of the security forces during nationwide protests against the government last year. Mohammad Mahdi Karami and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini had appealed against their sentences, saying they had been tortured into making false confessions.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said the executions were "abhorrent". The total number of protesters known to have been executed in the aftermath of the unrest is now four.

Demonstrations against the clerical establishment erupted in September following the death in custody of a woman detained by morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab, or headscarf, "improperly".

A former royal biographer has said he is “perplexed” by the Duke of Sussex’s memoirs and says it contains the kind of revelations you would expect from a “B-list celebrity”.

Jonathan Dimbleby said Prince Harry had “constructed a narrative of his life which goes right back to the death of his mother”, as his highly anticipated book, Spare, is due to be released on Tuesday.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Dimbleby, who interviewed Charles when, as Prince of Wales, he revealed his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, said: “I am perplexed. I am at a loss. He is clearly a very troubled man.

“I’m concerned incidentally that everyone uses the word revelations. Yes, there are obviously revelations about how he lost his virginity, taking drugs, and how many people he feels he might have shot down from his Apache. LE MONDE : Après avoir connu un profond déclin, ils se coordonnent désormais et commencent à obtenir des résultats, portés par la sortie de la pandémie et le choc de l’inflation au Royaume-Uni.

Les Britanniques n’avaient pas connu ça depuis trois décennies. Depuis l’été dernier, de grandes grèves secouent régulièrement le pays, en particulier dans les services publics. Pour aider les usagers à s’y retrouver, les médias ont dû mettre en place des calendriers des grèves.

Cette semaine, du 3 au 7 janvier, deux syndicats se sont relayés pour immobiliser les trains, avec certaines journées pratiquement sans trafic ; vendredi, les agents des autoroutes ont aussi débrayé, ainsi que les inspecteurs du permis de conduire ; mardi 10 janvier, ce sera au tour des instituteurs en Ecosse, puis, le lendemain, des ambulanciers en Angleterre. La semaine suivante, les infirmières reprennent leur mouvement historique : en décembre 2022, elles avaient effectué leur première grève depuis la création de leur syndicat en 1906, et elles ont prévu deux nouvelles journées d’action.

Sunak barely mentioned Brexit, in a single sentence referring to the agility of UK regulations post exiting the EU as being an opportunity to seize. Starmer reminded us that he had been a 'Remainer' but that he had been unable to disagree with those who had voted to leave. Whilst Starmer mentioned global warming, AI and an ageing population, Sunak failed to mention any of these major issues. Sunak presented his five pledges including legislation to stop small boats crossing the Channel whilst Starmer outlined his proposals to devolve powers from an over-centralised Westminster.

BBC: A retired commanding officer has accused Prince Harry of "turning against" his military family after "having trashed his birth family".

In his memoir, the Duke of Sussex describes killing 25 Taliban fighters in Afghanistan as "chess pieces taken off the board".

Ex-colonel Tim Collins said that was "not how you behave in the army".

Prince Harry gives details about his time as a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan in his memoir Spare.

BBC News has obtained a copy of the book after it was put on sale early in Spain. In it, Prince Harry reveals for the first time that he killed 25 enemy fighters - which is perfectly possible after two tours in the Helmand region of the country.

"It wasn't a statistic that filled me with pride but nor did it make me ashamed," he writes.

"When I was plunged into the heat and confusion of battle, I didn't think about those as 25 people. You can't kill people if you see them as people.

"In truth, you can't hurt people if you see them as people. They were chess pieces taken off the board, bad guys eliminated before they kill good guys.

"They trained me to 'other' them and they trained me well."

Responding to the prince's comments, a senior Taliban leader Anas Haqqani tweeted: "Mr Harry! The ones you killed were not chess pieces, they were humans; they had families who were waiting for their return...

Strengste Geheimhaltung war angesagt. Eigentlich hätte es erst am Dienstag, dem 10. Januar, erscheinen sollen. Auch für die Rezensenten gab es keine Vorausexemplare. Prinz Harrys gross angekündigtes Erinnerungsbuch «The Spare» (deutscher Titel: «Reserve») wurde gehütet wie ein Schatz. Was einen Hype schüren sollte. Die Rechnung ging in Grossbritannien auf. Spekulationen über die Memoiren des englischen Prinzen mehrten sich. Ein Fernsehinterview mit ihm wurde für Sonntag angekündigt, um zwei Tage vor dem weltweiten Erscheinen auch die letzten Uneingeweihten über das Ereignis zu informieren. Was die durch Werbung erzeugte Spannung betraf, fühlte man sich an den Erwartungsrausch erinnert, den ein neues «Harry Potter»-Buch jeweils generierte. Alles war so genau, so lückenlos geplant.

Bis dann durch ein Versehen die spanischen Verleger aus der Reihe tanzten und das Buch schon in dieser Woche publizierten. Was für ein geschicktes Versehen das war. Brexit: Thousands of Britons Expelled from EU since End of Transition Period

THE GUARDIAN: More than 2,250 UK nationals ordered to leave bloc between January 2021 and September 2022

More than 2,250 British citizens were ordered to leave EU member states between the end of the Brexit transition period and September last year, according to figures from the bloc’s statistical office.

Quarterly data published late last month by Eurostat shows a total of 2,285 UK nationals were expelled from 1 January 2021, when British citizens lost their free movement rights within the EU, until the third quarter of last year.

Jan 6, 2023 | The Duke of Sussex has revealed that he killed 25 people while serving as an Apache helicopter pilot in Afghanistan. In his autobiography Spare, Harry said he did not think of them as “people” but instead as “chess pieces” that had been taken off the board. The Telegraph, which obtained a Spanish language copy of the memoir from a bookshop in Spain, revealed that Harry wrote that flying six missions during his second tour of duty on the front line resulted in “the taking of human lives” of which he was neither proud nor ashamed. Describing watching a video of each “kill” when he returned to base, he wrote of Taliban fighters as “baddies” who were being eliminated before they could kill “goodies”. “So, my number is 25. It’s not a number that fills me with satisfaction, but nor does it embarrass me,” he wrote. Former British Army Officer Colonel Richard Kemp says it is "distasteful" for Prince Harry to be publicising how many people he killed in battle.

In one claim, he says his brother, Prince William, physically attacked him in a row over his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. The book officially goes on sale in the UK and the US next week, but media outlets have obtained copies in Spain where it has gone on sale by mistake. The memoir is Harry's account and Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace have both said they will not comment.

In the Spanish translation of Harry’s memoir, which was accidentally released early in Spain and obtained by journalists from the US publication Page Six, the duke reportedly writes that the now-Prince of Wales had “long harboured suspicions about the Other Woman”.

Their father’s cheating – which was confirmed by the then-Prince of Wales in 1994 two years after his separation from Diana – had caused the older prince immense suffering as a child and teenager, Harry claims.

“(It) confused him, tormented him, and when those suspicions were confirmed he felt tremendous guilt for having done nothing, said nothing, sooner,” Page Six reports the duke wrote in a copy of his book translated from Spanish.
