Democracy Now! Is the US News Planning to Assassinate Maduro?

Nov 7, 2025 | The U.S. is continuing to blow up boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific despite growing international condemnation, while the Trump administration reportedly considers launching airstrikes on Venezuela or even assassinating President Nicolás Maduro.

“We are committing wanton criminal acts of assassination in the Caribbean [against] innocent people who haven’t been found guilty of anything, and kind of setting the stage for an attack on Caracas itself in an attempt to take out its leader,” says Peter Kornbluh, a senior analyst at the National Security Archive.

Kornbluh also discusses the legacy of the Church Committee 50 years ago, which investigated abuses by U.S. intelligence agencies, including coups and assassinations abroad.

"Rubio's Ideological Project": What's Driving Trump's Campaign against Venezuela?

Oct 27, 2025 | The Trump administration has now killed at least 43 people in 10 strikes against so-called drug boats in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean. The threat of war against Venezuela and the surrounding region is growing as the Pentagon deploys the world's largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, to the Caribbean. Alejandro Velasco, associate professor at New York University, says the Latin American policy is "primarily Marco Rubio's ideological project," motivated by a desire to oust the government of Venezuela and weaken the allied government of Cuba.

Why Nicolás Maduro Faces Criminal Charges in the U.S.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called Mr. Maduro, the Venezuelan leader who faces narco-terrorism charges, a “fugitive from American justice.”

Trump administration officials seeking to remove Nicolás Maduro as the leader of Venezuela have been citing a federal indictment returned half a decade ago in Manhattan as one justification.

The indictment, by a grand jury in March 2020 during President Trump’s first term, charges Mr. Maduro in a decades-long narco-terrorism and international cocaine trafficking conspiracy, and accuses him of overseeing a violent drug cartel as he rose to lead the South American nation. The United States is offering a $50 million reward for his capture.

The United States does not recognize Mr. Maduro as Venezuela’s president, but the decision to indict a putative head of state was unusual, representing an escalation of the Trump administration’s efforts to pressure Mr. Maduro to leave office.

Now, with the charges still pending, Marco Rubio, the secretary of state and national security adviser, has repeatedly mentioned the 2020 indictment and called Mr. Maduro a “fugitive from American justice,” seemingly opening the door further to efforts by the United States to oust Mr. Maduro and seize him as it would any criminal on the run from the law. » | Benjamin Weiser | Wednesday, October 1, 2025

Sep 19, 2025 | "Marco Rubio is a Cuban American. Nicolás Maduro is enemy number one."

Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro called Marco Rubio the "lord of death and war" after the US carried out “extra-judicial killings” in the Caribbean, bombing two alleged Venezuelan drug boats and killing 14 personnel without clear evidence. Christopher Sabatini, Senior Fellow for Latin America at Chatham House, says Trump and Rubio want to "take out" Maduro's regime by provoking a military coup, without resorting to boots on the ground.

In the interview, Rubio gushes like a love-drunk teen about Donald Trump’s ‘uncanny instincts.’ He is effectively talking the President’s Cabinet out of their jobs by asserting that Donald Trump is so smart that he doesn’t need advisors. He said, "His instincts are uncanny. The President has incredible instincts about the right thing to do. When he says this is the direction I want to go, our job is not to spend the whole day trying to change his mind... Our job is to execute on the President's vision based on really uncanny instincts."

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The secretary of state, heading to talks with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, said future talks with Moscow will be needed to determine what Russia is willing to give up to end the war.

US to Send Migrants & Criminals to El Salvador's Mega Prison? | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Tue, Feb 4, 2025 | El Salvador's President, Nayib Bukele, has made an unprecedented offer to the US. He has offered to take in undocumented migrants in the US, no matter their country of origin. He has also offered to put convicted American criminals in El Salvador's Mega Prison. Bukele has overseen a sharp fall in gang crime in El Salvador. But arbitrary arrests, custodial torture and extrajudicial killings have been on the rise. Will the US send its criminals to a Black Site in El Salvador? Will Bukele's Mega Prison become the new Guantanamo Bay?

Trump Says He Would Jail Americans in El Salvador ‘in a Heartbeat’

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The proposal is almost certainly illegal, experts said, but President Trump’s eagerness to entertain it showed his willingness to embrace extreme measures to demonstrate he is tough on crime.

President Trump said on Tuesday that he was open to an offer by El Salvador’s president to jail convicted criminals, including American citizens, in the Central American nation’s notorious “megaprison.”

“If we had the legal right to do it, I would do it in a heartbeat,” Mr. Trump said.

He almost surely does not have the legal right to do it, legal experts say, and any attempt to carry out President Nayib Bukele’s plan would probably be challenged in court.

But Mr. Bukele’s proposal to essentially turn El Salvador into a penal colony for the United States showed how far he is willing to go to define himself as Mr. Trump’s primary ally in a region that the American president has disparaged. And for Mr. Trump, even musing over the proposal signaled his willingness to embrace extreme measures to show he is tough on crime and illegal immigration.

“It’s quite extraordinary and unprecedented and alarming in many ways,” said Michael E. Shifter, a senior fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue research institute in Washington. “I know a lot of experts have raised questions about the constitutionality and legality of this deal, but Bukele is a leader who has absolute power in El Salvador and it seems Trump seems to be moving in a similar direction in trying to reduce or eliminate any checks on his power.” » | Zolan Kanno-Youngs | Reporting from Washington | Tuesday, February 4, 2025

Marco Rubio Bans Rainbow Flags at Embassies

LGBTQ NATION: Marjorie Taylor Greene celebrated the move: "I'm not tired of winning!!"

Secretary of State Mark Rubio issued a “One Flag Policy” on Tuesday this week, which will allow three flags to be flown at U.S. outposts: the U.S. flag, the POW/MIA flag, and the Hostages and Wrongful Detainees flag, the rightwing Free Beacon reports.

“Starting immediately, only the United States of America flag is authorized to be flown or displayed at U.S. facilities, both domestic and abroad, and featured in U.S. government content,” the order states, according to the Free Beacon. “The flag of the United States of America united all Americans under the universal principles of justice, liberty, and democracy. These values, which are the bedrock of our great country, are shared by all American citizens, past and present.” » | Alex Bollinger | Wednesday, January 22, 2025

On Sunday, Marco Rubio sent out a cryptic warning to Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro that only included a before and after picture of Moammar Gaddafi. One picture was before US intervention and one was right before Gaddafi was brutally murdered. Rubio’s tweet can only be viewed as a threat of what the United States wants to do to Maduro in Venezuela, as Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains.
