Number of Muslims in the U.S. Doubles Since 9/11

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Mormonism grows 45% and spreads across nation

A new survey reveals the dramatically changing face of religion in America, with the number of Muslims in the U.S. soaring 67% in the decade since the 9/11 attacks.

Data released Tuesday from the 2010 U.S. Religion Census shows Islam was the fastest growing religion in America in the last 10 years, with 2.6 million living in the U.S. today, up from 1 million in 2000.

Mormonism too saw remarkable growth, with a 45% increase in adherents. It added nearly 2 million members since 2000, bringing their number in the U.S. to 6.1 million.

"Both of these groups entered more than 200 counties that they weren't in 10 years ago," said Dale Jones, data analyst and mapping specialist for the Religion Census.

The findings represent religious people who attend services. Census surveyors collected data on congregational adherents of 236 religious groups, including full members, their children and others who regularly attend services, with a 5% margin of error.

In the Midwest and parts of the South there are now more Muslims than Jews for the first time. Immigration from parts of the Muslim world and a small rise in conversions are the driving force behind the growth, researchers said. Jones also speculated that the burst of anti-Islam sentiment after the 9/11 attacks could have done more to grow the religion's presence in the U.S. than slow it. Those on the fence about converting to Islam may have decided to do so on principle. » | Meghan Neal / New York Daily News | Thursday, May 03, 2012

New York Rally Condemns Congressional Hearing on Muslim Terrorism

THE GUARDIAN: Protesters say hearings planned by Congressman Peter King are unfair for singling out Muslims rather than extremists

Some 300 people gathered in Times Square in New York on Sunday to speak out against a planned congressional hearing on Muslim terrorism, criticising it as xenophobic and saying that singling out Muslims, rather than extremists, is unfair.

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and the imam who led an effort to build an Islamic centre near the World Trade Centre site were among those who addressed the crowd.

"Our real enemy is not Islam or Muslims," said the imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf. "The enemy is extremism and radicalism and radical ideology."

The chairman of the homeland security committee, Peter King, has said affiliates of al-Qaida are radicalising some American Muslims and has planned hearings, starting on Thursday, on the threat he says they pose.

King, a Republican from New York's Long Island, told CNN's State of the Union programme on Sunday that he feared Muslims in the US were becoming more radical and identifying with terrorists.

Speakers at the cold and drizzly Times Square rally said King was targeting Muslims unfairly. >>> Associated Press | Monday, March 07, 2011

Comment:

To say that our real enemy is not Islam but extremism and radicalism is like saying that a flood is caused by the water, not the heavy rainfall that brought it! In other words, we have to ask ourselves what is it that is causing all this extremism, what is the source of our problems with Islamic terrorism and Islamic extremism? What is feeding all this extremism? And of course the answer to these questions is the socio-political ideology known as Islam. It is wrapped up in a deity; but that alters nothing. Islam breeds extremism. It really is a no-brainer! Any ideology which calls for total submission and total dedication to the cause, and to the exclusion of all else, even until death, is bound to make people single-minded and obsessive. By its very nature, it is bound to breed extremism. In the case of Islam, it breeds Islamic extremism. Full stop! It’s that simple! – © Mark

US Jews, Muslims Launch Unprecedented Drive against Anti-Semitism, Xenophobia

HAARETZ: Dozens of synagogues and mosques across the United States and Canada are to take part in a first-of-its-kind three-day joint public relations campaign against anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim xenophobia beginning on Friday.

The initiative, which was given the code-name "Twinning," calls for close cooperation between rabbis and imams based in some of the largest cities in North America, including Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Palm Beach, St. Louis, and Washington DC.

Organizers say the venture, which will encompass an estimated 100,000 Jews and Muslims, will feature rabbis appearing before Muslim congregants in mosques while imams address Jewish worshipers at synagogues. In addition, workshops and symposiums will be held to examine ways to combat anti-Semitism and anti-Islamic hatred. >>> By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent | November 21, 2008
