Republicans must “quit underestimating” Joe Biden, the former US House speaker Newt Gingrich said, because the president is winning the fight.

Writing on his own website, Gingrich said: “Conservatives’ hostility to the Biden administration on our terms tends to blind us to just how effective Biden has been on his terms.

“… We dislike Biden so much, we pettily focus on his speaking difficulties, sometimes strange behavior, clear lapses of memory and other personal flaws. Our aversion to him and his policies makes us underestimate him and the Democrats.”

Gingrich’s words pleased the White House – Ron Klain, Joe Biden’s chief of staff, tweeted a link with the message: “You don’t have to take my word for it, any more.” » | Martin Pengelly in New York | Saturday, December 3, 2022

Gingrich: U.S. ‘Losing the War’ with Radical Islam

POLITICO: Newt Gingrich issued a stinging rebuke of American policy toward Islamic extremism Saturday, saying elites in both parties refuse to acknowledge the severity of the threat to Western civilization.

“The United States is losing the war with radical Islamists,” said Gingrich in a speech at Rep. Steve King’s Iowa Freedom Summit.

He likened the Obama administration’s approach to extremism to the appeasement of Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, and criticized Hillary Clinton’s record on the issue as secretary of state, saying he had given up hope that she would adequately address the threat if she were president.

But the former speaker of the House and candidate for the Republican nomination in 2012 did not reserve his criticism for Democrats alone.

“We have an elite frankly in both parties who won’t tell the truth. …You cant win this war if you won’t admit it’s a war.”

“The State Department was about equally bad under George W. Bush,” he said. » | Ben Schreckinger | Saturday, January 24, 2015

Newt Gingrich All But Concedes His Campaign Is Over

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: CONCORD, N.C. — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich all but conceded Wednesday that his White House campaign is over.

He said he expects Mitt Romney will be the nominee and called on the party to unite behind the former Massachusetts governor.

“You have to at some point be honest about what’s happening in the real world as opposed to what you would like to have happened,” Gingrich told supporters at a suburban Charlotte, N.C. restaurant the morning after Romney swept primary contests in five states.

“Gov. Romney had a very good day yesterday. You have to give him some credit. He’s worked for six years. He put together a big machine ... I think I would obviously be a better candidate.”

But Gingrich said GOP voters didn’t agree, and that he would begin working to unite the party. » | Mitch Weiss | Associated Press | Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Gingrich: It's Obama's Fault People Think He's Muslim

CBS NEWS: PORT FOURCHON, La. - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich suggested Friday that President Obama is to blame for perceptions among his detractors that he is Muslim.

"I have said publicly several times that I believe Obama is a Christian. He went to a Christian church for over 20 years. He was listening to the sermons. The fact is I take him at his word," Gingrich said told reporters in Louisiana the day before the GOP primary here.

"But I think it is very bizarre that he is desperately concerned to apologize to Muslim religious fanatics while they are killing young Americans, while at the same time going to war against the Catholic Church and against every right-to-life Protestant organization in the country. I just think it's a very strange value system," Gingrich added.

Then, asked whether it concerned him that many people continue to believe Obama is Muslim, Gingrich replied, "It should bother the president. Why does the president behave the way that people would think that? You have to ask, why would they believe that? It's not because they're stupid. It's because they watch the kind of things I just described to you. When you have every bishop in the Catholic Church say this administration's at war with their religion, you don't think that has an impact?" » | Sarah Huisenga | Friday, March 23, 2012

GOP Worst-case Scenario: Long Fight

My comment:

I have been in the USA since December, so I have been able to observe first-hand the circus that is the Republican US primaries.

One is subjected to the running commentary night after night after night. The whole thing is ridiculous. Americans think this is democracy in action. I'd beg to differ.

In my humble opinion, the only man who has a snowball's chance in hell of beating Obama is Mitt Romney. He is not perfect, but he's the best that the GOP can throw up at this time. Even though he is wooden, he is a likable fellow. And has been very successful to boot.

The others: Forget them! Rick Santorum, though telegenic, is a throwback; furthermore, he's too emotional and sentimental for high office. He is certainly also far, far too regressive. His social conservatism is going to turn off the moderate voters, the feminists, and the gays.

Newt Gingrich is not right for the time. He'd have made a great president right after 9/11. Alas, the train has left the station for him, I fear.

Now they talk of the possibility of Sarah Palin running. God! How desperate can the 'Grand Old Party' be? Her high-pitched voice is enough to sour the milk! And what experience does she have to run the world's superpower? (Though I hasten to add that such things seem not to matter to the American voter these days. Witness Barack Obama's success at the polls.) Moreover, I somehow doubt that Sarah Palin could put a pin in Tehran or Kabul on a globe.

At this rate, the Republicans are going to lose. And they have only themselves to blame, because they are doing it to themselves. They are bickering with each other endlessly, and in such a negative way. Such negativity in a lead-up to an election is rare to behold – anywhere.

By the time November comes, the electorate will be so damn sick of hearing the Republican candidates going on ad infinitum, and trying to outdo each other in being the most conservative, or most pious candidate that they'll end up re-electing Obama into the White House. If this happens, the Republicans will have been the architects of their own demise. They will have had their chance in Mitt Romney, but they will have been too dim to seize it.

If the Republican Party is serious about winning this election, it should stop the nastiness and close ranks behind their only hope: Mitt Romney. If they don't, they'll be committing electoral suicide. – © Mark
