Julian Assange: Wikileaks Founder in Last-ditch Bid to Avoid US Extradition | BBC News

Feb 20, 2024 | Lawyers for Julian Assange are launching what could be his final bid to avoid extradition to the US to face trial over leaking military secrets.

The two-day hearing at the High Court in London is due to hear his team argue he should be allowed a full appeal. There is no guarantee that will be granted and if turned down, he could be handed over within weeks.

Supporters of the Wikileaks founder say he exposed wrongdoing, but the US says Mr Assange put lives at risk.

Julian Assange Makes Final Appeal against Extradition to US | DW News

Feb 20, 2024 | After more than a decade fighting authorities in the British courts, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is now facing what could be his last chance to stop his extradition to the US. A crowd of Assange supporters has gathered outside London's high court calling for him to be released. His lawyers will ask judges there today to grant a new appeal hearing. If that fails, Assange's backers worry he could be put on a plane to the US straight away, where prosecutors want to put him on trial on spying charges. But Assange's wife says he would not survive being extradited.

It is a NATIONAL DISGRACE that the government and authorities in this country have imprisoned this poor ailing man for so long. That they are thinking of extraditing him to the USA where he faces a lifetime in prison is nothing short of an OUTRAGE.

Our government is behaving like America’s little poodle! Further, it is incredible that our government can condemn Putin for the horrendous imprisonment of Navalny and his subsequent death yet see nothing wrong with this inhumane treatment of Julian Assange, who has suffered unnecessarily for so long anyway.

Conditions in Belmarsh Prison can only be marginally better, if any better at all, than the conditions that the poor ailing Navalny was kept under. So there is a stench of HYPOCRISY in criticising Putin for keeping Navalny in prison in dreadful conditions when we are doing much the same with Assange! Further, our government was quick to condemn Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin for what happened to Navalny — and rightly so — but what makes Julian Assange’s case any different? Navalny fought for what he considered to be right; Julian Assange has fought for what he considered to be right. So what’s the difference? Further, what will happen if Assange dies in custody? There will be egg on many people’s faces then! And what will our government and authorities have to say if the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin condemn them for Assange’s death?

This is a perfect example of DOUBLE STANDARDS! In fact, not only should Julian Assange be released, he should be given millions in compensation for the way he has been badly treated thus far!

| Dienstag, 4. Jan 20, 2023 | In Washington, D.C., human rights and free speech advocates gather today for the Belmarsh Tribunal, focused on the imprisonment of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Assange has been languishing for close to four years in the harsh Belmarsh prison in London while appealing extradition to the United States on espionage charges. If convicted, Assange could face up to 175 years in jail for publishing documents that exposed war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Five major news organizations that once partnered with WikiLeaks recently called on the Biden administration to drop charges against Assange. We speak to British MP and former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is in Washington, D.C., to participate in the Belmarsh Tribunal, about Assange and freedom of the press. We also cover the state of leftism around the globe, from labor rights in the U.K. and Europe to the war in Ukraine, to political unrest in Brazil and Peru.

Julian Assange has been denied permission to leave prison to attend the funeral of Dame Vivienne Westwood, according to her family.

Westwood’s family said they were “deeply disappointed that we were unable to fulfil Vivienne’s wishes but are unsurprised by the decision, which is unjust and in keeping with the inhumane treatment [Assange] has received from the UK authorities up to this point”.

They added: “Julian has not been convicted of any crime, yet he is treated as if he is a terrorist, the only thing he is guilty of is publishing the truth.” » | Ben Quinn | Monday, January 9, 2023

Mike Pompeo & CIA Sued for Spying on Americans Who Visited Julian Assange in Embassy in UK

Aug 16, 2022 Lawyers and journalists sued the CIA and former CIA Director Mike Pompeo Monday for spying on them while they met Julian Assange when he was living in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he had political asylum. The lawsuit is being filed as Britain prepares to extradite the WikiLeaks founder to the United States, where he faces up to 175 years in prison for violating the Espionage Act by publishing classified documents exposing U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. We speak with the lead attorney in the case, Richard Roth, who details how a private security company stationed at the London Embassy unknowingly sent images from Assange's visitors' cellphones and laptops as well as streamed video from inside meetings to American intelligence. He says the offenses breach a range of client privileges and could sway a U.S. judge to dismiss the case if Assange is successfully extradited.

Is It Time to Give Julian Assange His Freedom? | Media Watch

Julian Assange appeals to London’s High Court to block his extradition to the United States as calls grow for the WikiLeaks founder to be finally freed.

Joe Biden is said to be a devout Christian. Surely, then, as a devout Christian, he cannot possibly justify allowing Assange to be treated in this despicable, inhumane and unChristian manner. It is high time that President Biden show us all his true Christian colours and Christian compassion and order this poor man be released. Clearly, Julian Assange has suffered enough already. Let him return to Australia, to his family. It is the only truly Christian thing to do. – © Mark Alexander

Julian Assange: UK Government Approves Extradition of WikiLeaks Founder to US

Julian Assange’s Extradition from UK to US Approved by Home Secretary

THE GUARDIAN: Fresh appeal likely after Priti Patel gives green light to extradition of WikiLeaks co-founder

Priti Patel has approved the extradition of WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange to the US.

The case passed to the home secretary last month after the supreme court ruled that there were no legal questions over assurances given by US authorities over how he is likely to be treated.

While Patel has given a green light, an expected cross-appeal by Assange’s legal team would restart the clock on a renewed legal battle in the courts.

It is likely to focus on grounds such as the right to freedom of expression and whether the extradition request is politically motivated. Patel had been considering whether the US extradition request met remaining legal tests, including a promise not to execute him. » | Jamie Grierson and Ben Quinn | Friday, June 17, 2022

UK Court Approves Extradition of Julian Assange to US

THE GUARDIAN: Home secretary to decide whether WikiLeaks founder will be extradited to US on espionage charges

A court has formally approved the extradition of Julian Assange to the US on espionage charges, in what will ultimately be a decision for the UK home secretary, Priti Patel.

The Wikileaks co-founder, who has the right of appeal, appeared by videolink during the Westminster magistrates court hearing, which one of his barristers described as a “brief but significant moment in the case”.

Mark Summers QC, for Assange, told the chief magistrate that he had no option but to send the case to the home secretary. It was not open, at this point, for Assange’s team to raise fresh evidence but there had been “fresh developments”, he added.

Summers said “serious submissions” would be made to the home secretary regarding US sentencing and conditions. » | Ben Quinn | Wednesday, April 20, 2022

Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday.

Why on earth are the British authorities continuing to persecute this poor man? This is a national disgrace! The mere thought of extraditing Assange to the US to face apalling conditions in prison and for an extraordinarily long period of time simply for embarrassing the US is a national disgrace. It also has grave implications on all journalists to be able to report in future with impunity. Boris Johnson should bring this farce to a speedy close. This is truly not worthy of the United KIngdom. If the authorities feel that Assange has done wrong, then he has surely paid the price already for any perceived wrongdoings. He has surely done his time. This disgraceful treatment of Assange is not the British way. – © Mark
