Oct 25, 2022 | Under Saudi Arabia's restrictive cybercrime laws, even makeup tutorials or behaviour suggesting same-sex attraction can lead to arrest. Suhail al Jameel's photo on Twitter got him charged with sharing nudity online. TikToker Tala Safwan posted a conversation with a female friend and was accused of “suggestiveness that could have a negative impact on public morality". And Mohamad al Bokari was convicted of promoting homosexuality online and “imitating women”. Our Observer is a Saudi activist living in exile in the US. He told us more about how these LGBT influencers face danger and arrest by sharing their identities online.

'Putin Will Be Gone Soon': Exiled Russian Dissident Ilya Ponomarev • FRANCE 24 English

Apr 6, 2022 • Exiled Russian #dissident #IlyaPonomarev gave an interview to FRANCE 24 from Kyiv. The former Russian lawmaker was the only member of the Douma to vote against the annexation of Crimea back in 2014 and now lives in #Ukraine. He predicted that "#Putin will be gone soon", arguing that the Russian president has "definitely lost the war" in Ukraine and that "no dictator who has lost a war can stay in power". Asked about the suspected war crimes in #Bucha that have shocked the world, Ponomarev claimed that the killings were most likely the results of "panic" by retreating Russian forces, rather than being carefully planned.

And if the second wave of Covid was not enough to dampen an already grey autumn mood, another gruesome terror attack, three killed in a stabbing spree inside Notre Dame Basilica in the heart of Nice, a city already targeted during a 2016 Bastille Day rampage. The suspect, a newly-arrived 21-year old from Tunisia's south. It is the third time in just over three months.

'Our Democracy Is Under Threat', Former Cambridge Analytica Employee Tells FRANCE 24


Brittany Kaiser is a former employee of the British political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica, which is now notorious for its involvement in the election of Donald Trump and in the Brexit campaign. She has just released a memoir about her time working for Cambridge Analytica, entitled "Targeted". She spoke to FRANCE 24 about how she witnessed the firm deliberately create targeted ads for political aims, why she decided to speak out, and why she believes we are not any more protected from manipulation today than we were in 2016.

Where is Jamal Khashoggi? Since exactly one week ago, his fiancée and friends have been rallying outside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where the journalist and prominent critic of the Kingdom's policies disappeared. Khashoggi has gone for wedding documents. Riyadh claims he exited through a back door, the Turks are dubious and the search is on for clues. We ask our panel how much the columnist is a thorn in the side of Mohammed Bin Salman and a régime which insists it's opening up.
