Islamophobia Inc | Al Jazeera Investigations

Across the United States, there has been a growth in organizations that portray Islam as a threat.

Over two years, the number of groups that make up what’s become known as the Islamophobia industry has more than tripled.

This investigation reveals the tactics these groups use to instigate a fear of Islam, including how they manipulate social media to create a false narrative that Muslims are trying to take over the country.

Anti-Muslim messages proliferate social media with bought-in followers, fake accounts and robotic amplifiers.

The investigation also shows how these organizations try to suppress the rise of a Muslim political voice in America. It uncovers the “dark money” that has fuelled the rapid growth of Islamophobia Inc. - tens of millions of dollars which is funnelled through secretive, anonymous donor funds.

We unveil the donors of the dark money and ask; what do they ultimately hope to achieve?

White Nationalist Richard Spencer Talks to Al Jazeera (December 2016)

Richard Spencer is the president and director of the National Policy Institute and is credited with coining the term "alt-right". The movement is a loosely organized far-right group that espouses white nationalism and has shown strong support for US president-elect Donald Trump. Spencer describes alt-right as "the identity politics for white people in the 21st century". Spencer, 38, rose to prominence after a video surfaced of him shouting "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory" at a Washington, DC conference as members of the crowd raised their hands in a Nazi salute. His National Policy Institute is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for promoting white-nationalist views. The institute's mission statement says it aims "to elevate the consciousness of whites, ensure our biological and cultural continuity, and protect our civil rights". "The institute ... will study the consequences of the ongoing influx that non-Western populations pose to our national identity," it says. Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey sat down with Spencer in College Station, Texas.

Inside Story - Why Is Israel Moving to Ban Al Jazeera?

The move comes as no surprise after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the media network of incitement in its coverage of the recent protests around the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Calls to shut the network down are not uncommon. The most recent from the four Arab nations blockading Qatar, who have made similar accusations against the broadcaster. So, what's behind this decision? | Presenter: Martine Dennis

Israel is moving forward to revoke media credentials of Al Jazeera journalists and close the network's office in Jerusalem, the country's communication minister has announced.

Inside Story: What Is Behind the Campaign against Al Jazeera?

Unreasonable, unbalanced and not actionable. That's the Qatari government's reaction to the list of 13 demands from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and their allies. The demands include closing down the Al Jazeera network.

It's often said that journalists should avoid becoming part of the story. But the story of this regional crisis is now putting journalism at the centre of it.

Al Jazeera says the ultimatum - which must be met within 10 days - would not affect daily business.

Fellow journalists and industry representatives are voicing their angry reactions. They see it as an attempt to silence freedom of expression and using the news organisation as a bargaining chip in political differences. | Presenter: Hazem Sika | Guests: Marwan Kabalan - Associate analyst at the Doha Institute, Arab Center for Research & Policy Studies; Philippe Leruth - President of the International Federation of Journalists; Rami Khouri - Professor of Journalism, American University of Beirut
