What's Noble about Islam?

It is often stated that "Islam is a noble religion". For the life of me I cannot see what is noble about this religion.

In Islam, women are stoned to death for adultery. Men usually get away with it! Women have their clitoris, prepuce, or labia removed, all in the name of circumcision, so that they are no longer able to enjoy making love. Women who make the deadly mistake of committing adultery are killed by members of their family for the supposed shame brought on that family. This is the so-called honour-killing.

People who steal have their hands or feet amputated. More serious crimes are punished with a ceremonious beheading in the public square. All in the name of Allah! People who indulge in alcohol suffer the indignity of being lashed.

Then we have this furore about harmless cartoons. It would certainly appear that these are the actions of a humourless people.

I really find it hard to understand what is "noble" about this faith! Am I missing something? Can you help me understand?

Mark, I encourage your visitors to provide tangible examples of "nobility." It certainly would be most helpful in understanding the true nature of this "religion." Further, President Bush has referred to Islam as a religion of "peace" and "love." Again, it would be most helpful for your visitors to provide specific examples of the demonstration of "peace" and "love." There are, of course, thousands of examples of both in Christianity.

I'll be waiting to see those examples of "nobility."

i'm of the firm opinion that Pope Benedict needs to speak out.

although i would say his hands are tied - for if they react this way to some cartoons, it would be world war 3 if the Pope said "islam is evil".

in light of that , i'm finding catholic thought on this to be most encouraging - mostly through low level priests. for example on radio (in ireland) today , an irish priest from Rome came out in support of the cartoons, and warned about "giving in" and a "return to the dark ages"....

priest - in Rome... go figure.

its starting folks - the backlash is starting.

I think you're right. I, too, think that the backlash is starting. Muslims worldwide have shown their true colours with this furore about their prophet.

Duh! Please explain. Too cryptic for me, I'm afraid.

There are no answers to your question: what is noble about Islam? Just crickets and tumbleweeds.

Tumbleweeds are an American movie symbol of a deserted and barren place devoid of people. Crickets, of course, are the insects you hear at night when there is otherwise total silence.

Thanks for your explanation. I feel stupid now! Perhaps I should have known. :-)

Stupid? Oh, don't be silly.

I might have guessed that perhaps Britain doesn't have sage-brush, and I don't recall hearing crickets when I was there in 1980.

If you pull some British terms on me, I'd be just as lost.

The Vatican has spoken out. Did you read what was said? It was disappointing. Extremely disappointing, in fact! The statement criticized the publication of the cartoons, saying they were offensive.

This Pope is well-versed on Islam. I thought a stronger statement in favour of Western values might have been made, especially because if they win this, what's next? Jesus, Moses, Abraham? They are all prophets of Islam. So if they can object to cartoons about Muhammad, then they can object to cartoons depicting the other prophets, too.

WE MUST win this fight.
